Joan Crawford: Her Life in Letters ~ Wasteland Press ~
by MICHELLE VOGEL

Description: From published author, Michelle Vogel, comes "Joan Crawford: Her Life in Letters." The letters derive from Ms. Crawford's meticulous attention to her fan base. She encouraged letters from her adoring fans and made the uncanny effort to answer them. What emerges is a chronological biography of filmdom's ultimate movie star. Additionally, the body of work by Ms. Vogel incorporates the letters along with explanatory narrative weaving together the events of a fabulous life and career. And that's not all! Cathy Crawford LaLonde, the sole executor of the Crawford estate, has transmitted written permission to the author for the exclusive rights to publish her mother's words in "Joan Crawford: Her Life in Letters." Here then is the first "authorized" biography since "Mommie Dearest." In reading the letters, with their introspective quality, the reader discovers the unique personality of Joan Crawford which contrasts significantly from the portrait presented in "Mommie Dearest." Biography aficionados will eagerly embrace the penetrating in depth aspects into the life of a twentieth century icon.

Movie Clip Created by: Mark Toscani, a Philadelphia filmmaker and digital editor. He was first inspired by Joan Crawford when, at the age of 8, he saw WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE? on TV. He wondered to himself, “Who is that neat, chiseled-boned lady in the wheelchair?” From then on, he has had a canvas on which to paint.

Liz Smith:

A small book has been published: "Joan Crawford — Her Life in Letters," which is exactly what it is. Years of notes — thank yous to press people, acknowledgments to fans, bits of news about her four adopted children, and a lot about the ups, downs and vagaries of her long, long career. Crawford's style is rather saccharine, lots of "Bless yous" and other effusive exclamations. But it seems genuine, in that her letter-writing was so compulsive and enduring. She comes across much softer than her screen image and not like the embittered Christina Crawford version of "Mommie Dearest."

Author Michelle Vogel bursts a few myths, including one where Glenda Jackson was supposed to have been witness to some Crawford cruelty to the kids. Contacted, Jackson says, "It never happened." The book also includes some startlingly romantic poetry from young Joan. I know this flies in the face of what one might prefer to believe about Joan. Joan Crawford had a miserable childhood and an unquenchable drive to better herself. These letters are part of the great star legend she created, and a bit of the woman who still existed under the image.

Reviews
A "Must Read" Book for all Crawford Fans

I literally could not put the book down until I had read the entire work. The concept of going through Joan Crawford's life through her letters was so unique in its approach. It was fascinating to read the letters and to have them arranged in a chronological sequence. After reading just about everything available about Crawford it was great to read what seemed to be a truthful, unbiased and fair account of this fascinating life. A big THANK YOU to Michelle Vogel for her well thought out presentation of one of the most incredible figures in entertainment history.

A Joan fan for decades; stumbled over this book...

I recently purchased this book from Michelle Vogel, and so far I think it is a wonderful read, a chronological timepiece of a major "star," who remained dedicated to her loyal fans. I admire her "staying power" and her ability to move through the changing decades. It must be an enormous accomplishment to grow to where she took herself with her great talents. I have read many accounts from other actors who held her in high regard. I personally feel that Christina over-exaggerated A LOT. The Hedda Hoppers of that era "overlooked" things and gave some privacy to the big stars, where today, it is reverse and things are out of control -- Joan should be credited for her vast accomplishments as an actress, over 80 films, and her determinations I feel helped her all the way. I admire her, and I am very proud to have become friendly with Michelle Vogel, thrilled that she undertook this responsibility, and put Joan Crawford on the bookshelves. It is wonderful to add this jewel to my collection. A job very well done, Michelle.

It was a pleasant change to read something positive about Ms. Crawford. No one can be as bad as she's been portrayed over the years and these letters prove what a caring person she was to not only her friends but to her many dedicated fans.

The Crawford family gave written permission to the author for these letters to be printed and officially read by the public. I'm thankful to them for allowing this very personal side of Ms. Crawford to be finally shown. The candid photos were also a good idea, they show a softer side to the Queen of MGM.

"Joan Crawford: Her Life In Letters" was a relishable read!!

A positive portrayal of Joan, June 3, 2005

I am thrilled someone finally wrote a positive book about Joan Crawford. This book was written with the approval of Joan's daughters and has a touching forward by her grandson. You get to see the real Joan -- an ambitious actress, a caring friend, and someone who was devoted to her fans. Joan probably loved her fans more any other star and I'm sure all her fans will enjoy reading this book!
